How to apply for asylum in Belgium?

If you wish to apply for asylum, the first step is to register your application.

Where to register your application?

  • If you are in Belgium: in Brussels, at the Immigration office (no later than 8 days after your arrival in the country)

  • If you are at the Belgian border: with the police
  • If you are detained in a prison or detention centre: with the director of the prison or detention centre.

It is not possible to lodge an application abroad (for example in a Belgian embassy abroad) or by e-mail.

The Immigration Office is the government body responsible for registering applications for international protection.

Which documents do you need?

Any document which proves your identity. You must bring them to the Immigration Office when you register your application for international protection.

At the same time, you can submit all relevant documents to prove that you are entitled to protection. If you do not have any document, you can still apply for international protection.
