Rent guarantee

A sum of money that the tenant pays into a blocked account in his name at the start of the rental agreement. At the end of the rental period, the tenant will get the money back if he has fulfilled all his obligations under the rental agreement.

Prescription

A written document that a doctor gives to the patient to buy certain medicines in the pharmacy.

Guardian

A person who, according to the court or ministry of a country, has to take care of a minor. As an unaccompanied minor, an administrative guardian will be assigned to you. Your guardian will help you with various tasks.

Reception

Applicants for international protection are entitled to material assistance (reception) during the complete procedure. 

Integration programme

If you obtain a right of residence in Belgium, you can follow an integration programme, or you must in certain cases. This is a course in which you learn about living, working, and learning in Belgium. You receive information about your rights and obligations. You can follow the integration course in Dutch/French or in another language.

Kind & Gezin (in Flanders) and ONE (in Wallonia) support families with children, following childbirth and with child care.

Resettlement

A procedure in which refugees are selected and transferred from a country where they have sought protection to a third country which has previously agreed to grant them a right of permanent residence.

Human trafficking

Human trafficking, often considered a modern form of slavery, involves exploitation of people in a variety of fields. Both sexual exploitation (often as part of prostitution) as well as economic exploitation (through labour) are concerned.

Contact tracing

To draw up a list of people who have had contact with a person infected with the coronavirus. These people will be informed that they have had contact with an infected person and that they must pay close attention to personal hygiene. This way, everyone can help in the battle against the coronavirus.

National number

The national number is a unique identification number (11 digits) assigned to persons registered in Belgium. Everyone with a Belgian identity document or a residence document has this number. You find the number at the top of your annex from the Immigration Office and on your immatriculation certificate (orange card).
