Applying for asylum in Belgium
People arriving in Belgium can apply for asylum there. Applying for asylum is asking for protection because your life is in danger in your country of origin.
Belgium will examine your application for international protection, this is called the 'procedure for international protection'. If you receive protection from Belgium, you receive the status of refugee and you can settle in Belgium. If you do not receive protection from Belgium, you must leave the territory.
To determine whether a person can be recognised as a refugee, Belgium applies the Geneva Convention. Various government organisations examine your application for international protection.
Once you have submitted your application for protection, you are entitled to material assistance throughout the examination of your application. This assistance consists of accommodation in a reception facility (usually a collective centre).
Applicants for international protection in Belgium do not receive financial assistance.
