Your guardian's tasks

If you are a minor and without a father or mother in Belgium, you will be assigned a guardian.

Your guardian supports you during important appointments and helps you make decisions:

  • Your guardian will visit you where you live (at least once a month).
  • Your guardian talks to you during the visit, and tries to answer your questions. He or she does this with the help of an interpreter if necessary.
  • Your guardian goes with you to appointments with the asylum services (Immigration Office, CGRS, CALL).
  • Your guardian helps you to look for a place to live.
  • Your guardian puts you in contact with a lawyer. Together, they give you advice about your procedure.
  • Your guardian helps you look for a school and helps with enrolment.
  • Your guardian helps you if you are ill.
  • Your guardian helps you find your family.

Ask your guardian all the questions you have about life in Belgium. Tell your guardian about your life in your country of origin and your journey here. That way, he or she can help you better.

Do you have a question about your guardian?

The Guardian service checks whether your guardian is carrying out their tasks. You can also contact the Guardian service yourself if you have any questions about their tasks.

Do you have a disagreement with your guardian? Talk about it with your guardian and/or social worker and look for a solution together with your guardian. If you cannot resolve a conflict by yourselves, contact the Guardian service.

In the event of a serious conflict, a justice of the peace will intervene. The judge may decide that the Guardian service has to assign another guardian to you.

You cannot choose your guardian yourself, the Guardian service decides.
