Refugee status

Asylum seekers who receive refugee status can remain in Belgium.

The CGRS (CGRA/CGVS) decides whether you can receive protection from Belgium. If you receive refugee status, you can stay for 5 years in Belgium. After 5 years, you can have an unlimited right of residence.

The CGRS takes its decision on the basis of the Geneva Convention on refugees.

Refugees have the same rights and obligations as Belgians. They can work and apply for social support. Ask your social worker or your lawyer for an explanation. You can also find information on the CGRS website.

Refugees cannot return to their country of origin.

Some applicants for protection do not receive refugee status but receive 'subsidiary protection'.
