Pocket money
Asylum seekers can earn some money if they help the staff in the reception centre.
Belgium does not provide financial assistance to applicants for international protection.
The Belgian government only provides material assistance: you get reception in a centre or another reception location. You do not receive any money, except a little pocket money that you can spend as you wish. This pocket money is given out once a week. An adult receives around 8 EURO a week.
In certain reception centres, you may also receive a little more money if you help the centre staff. For example, for cleaning corridors or showers, washing clothes, serving meals, etc. Ask your social worker how to apply to do these small jobs.
