Legal standards and social norms
Standards and norms are rules of conduct that everyone must respect in specific situations. A standard clearly sets out what you can and cannot do.
Legal standards
Standards which are set out in legislation are legal standards. All residents must respect the law and legal standards in Belgium. If you do not adhere to these standards, you may be punished (with a fine, imprisonment).
Social norms
Social norms are not enshrined in law, but everyone expects you to know and respect them. It is important to become familiar with these Belgian norms. If you do not respect these standards and norms, others will judge you negatively for your behaviour.
