The federal government
There is one government in Belgium that takes decisions for the country as a whole: the federal government.
In the federal government there are a maximum of 15 ministers, sometimes supported by a secretary of state. They take decisions and make draft laws for the country as a whole. There are an equal number of Dutch-speaking and French-speaking ministers. At the head of the federal government is the Prime Minister.
How is the federal government formed?
Following elections (every 5 years) the political parties that together have a majority of seats in parliament can form a government. The political parties of the majority nominate the ministers. Ministers are therefore not directly elected by the Belgian public.
Multiple political parties
In Belgium, one party never holds power alone. Various political parties need to work together in government, which we call a coalition.
What does the federal government decide on?
The federal government decides on important issues such as security, social security, public health, foreign affairs, justice, migration, defence, etc. For each issue, a minister or secretary of state is competent.
